Students and the Police

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."
-- Dr. (Felice) Leo(nardo) Buscaglia (b. 1924)
American Professor of Education at USC

This is our core responsibility - interacting with young adults and school administrators to ensure, within our resources, they have a safe educational environment. Because we do it better than any law enforcement agency in the nation we can proudly claim to be the pioneers of "school policing" and community relationships.

The Los Angeles School Police Department services LAUSD schools located in the following cities:

  • Cudahy
  • Gardena
  • Huntington Park
  • Lomita
  • Maywood
  • San Fernando
  • Vernon
  • West Hollywood
  • Bell
  • Bell Gardens
  • Carson
  • Hawthorne
  • Inglewood
  • Long Beach
  • Los Angeles
  • Monterey Park
  • Rancho Palos Verdes
  • South Gate
  • Torrance
  • Vernon

Every high school has at least one Police Officer assigned to the campus and every middle school has one Police Officer or School Safety Officer assigned to the campus.

Classroom discussions

Los Angeles School Police Officers assigned to campuses pull double-duty, acting as the resident law enforcement official, and regularly participating in self-initiated classroom discussions. This "specialized" policing allows students another opportunity to understand and appreciate their relationship with those sworn to protect them. Officers often develop their own curriculum and course materials and discuss current events and other topics relating to law enforcement, community activities, and personal achievement.

Interaction and Relationships

The efforts we make today as members of the law enforcement community allow our young adults the opportunity to become productive members of society tomorrow.
